When it comes to true crime shows, these days Netflix owns the market. Their investigative reporting and way they produce and tell the stories of these crimes is quite captivating. We thought today we’d put together a little list of some of our favorites and why.
1. Making a Murderer
This one blows us away every time we watch it. Making a Murderer was one of Netflix’s first true crime docuseries and one that took the world by storm at the time. Telling the story of Steven Avery, who spent just shy of two decades of his life behind bars for a crime he didn’t commit, it then details how he committed actual murder…or rather, was accused of and tried for it. The way Netflix and the producers present the case and the questionable evidence, really makes one think if he might in fact be convicted a second time of a crime he didn’t commit.
2. Tiger King
Who hasn’t seen this docuseries on Netflix? This particular series took the world by storm this year and brought to question how one man who collects exotic cats could get tangled in a murder-for-hire plot. Joe Exotic, his self-given moniker, was infamous for his collection of exotic tigers and lions which he kept in a zoo in the middle of Oklahoma of all places. He then, as you follow the series, gets himself caught in a murder-for-hire scheme against one of his rivals. This one is such a tasty treat of a series, with each episode having its own surprises!
3. Fyre: The Greatest Party That Never Happened
This one isn’t about some murder that will shock you, but a showcase in idiocy, really. It profiles the scheme motivated by greed and fraud, then spreads the world over by one of the most expensive social media videos ever produced. The man behind it all, Billy McFarland, attempted to throw the biggest party and music festival the world has ever seen, and it was a great idea… until it came time to execute it all. Watch this fire sale and discover for yourself its absurdity.
