Two San Jose police officers were injured while responding to a domestic violence call at a hotel in South San Jose. The San Jose Police Officers’ Association released the names of the officers involved in the incident. Officer Jamie Arredondo, who recently completed his first year with the police department, underwent a second surgery without complications on Friday. He had initially undergone surgery on Thursday night and is currently in stable condition. Officer Joseph Desroches, with 3.5 years of experience in the SJPD, was treated at a hospital for a graze wound and has been released.
The incident unfolded when a woman, who had a restraining order against a man, called the police to report his presence at the Extended Stay America on San Ignacio Avenue. However, the man, later identified as Kevin Briones, was not present when the officers arrived, and they left the scene. Briones later showed up around 10:30 p.m., prompting the woman to report a disturbance to the hotel front desk, which was then relayed to the police.
Desroches and Arredondo encountered Briones in a hotel hallway and instructed him to stay where he was. Briones allegedly reached into a duffel bag he was carrying, and when the officers ordered him to stop, he pulled out a 9mm pistol and opened fire, striking both officers. In response, the officers returned fire, hitting Briones. He then fled down the hallway, jumped through a third-story window, and crawled to a nearby Residence Inn hotel, where he was later found and arrested. Briones was subsequently hospitalized.
Arredondo sustained multiple gunshot wounds, while Desroches pulled him to safety and applied a tourniquet before realizing he had also been injured. San Jose Police Chief Paul Joseph provided these details during a press conference.
This incident marks the first time San Jose police officers have been shot in the line of duty since August 16, when a female officer was ambushed by a man involved in a domestic disturbance. The alleged gunman was charged with attempted murder of a peace officer.
