A Summit County, Ohio jury has found 23-year-old Sydney Powell guilty of the 2020 murder of her mother, Brenda Powell. The conviction, announced on Wednesday, includes two counts of murder, along with one count each of felonious assault and tampering with evidence.
On March 3, 2020, Akron police discovered 50-year-old Brenda Powell in her Scudder Drive residence, severely injured. Both she and her then 19-year-old daughter Sydney were rushed to a local hospital, where Brenda succumbed to her injuries. The Summit County Medical Examiner later determined Brenda’s death to be a homicide, caused by a combination of sharp and blunt force injuries. Prosecutors revealed that Sydney had struck her mother in the head with an iron skillet and stabbed her nearly 30 times in the neck following an argument.
Sydney Powell, who was initially released on bond, now faces up to life in prison. Her sentencing is scheduled for September 28.
