An 18-year-old student was tragically killed after being shot multiple times by another student outside Bowie High School in Arlington, Texas. The incident occurred around 2:50 p.m. on Wednesday near a portable building outside the school premises. As a result, the school was immediately placed on lockdown, preventing students from leaving for the day.
Upon arrival at the scene, School Resource Officers discovered the 18-year-old male student lying unresponsive on the ground, suffering from apparent gunshot wounds. Urgent medical attention was provided, and the student was swiftly transported to a nearby hospital. Unfortunately, despite the efforts of medical professionals, the victim succumbed to his injuries while at the hospital.
Law enforcement authorities swiftly initiated a search for the suspected shooter, a 17-year-old student. The individual attempted to flee the school but was apprehended by the police in close proximity to the campus. Once booked into Arlington City Jail, the suspect will face charges of murder.
In response to the tragic incident, families were directed to reunite with their children at a district building located several miles away from the school. Arlington police have assured the public that additional information regarding the incident will be shared as it becomes available.
During a press conference, Arlington Police Chief Al Jones expressed the community’s collective grief and emphasized the need to address such violence. Chief Jones stated, “Our hearts are with the entire Bowie High School community tonight. We, as a community, cannot tolerate this kind of violence. Not in our neighborhoods and not in our schools. Violence is never the right answer. We will continue to work in lockstep with our partners at Arlington ISD to ensure our schools are safe spaces where students can learn.”
Arlington ISD Superintendent Dr. Matt Smith echoed Chief Jones’ sentiments and extended condolences to the Bowie High School and Arlington ISD community. Dallas ISD also expressed their support and sympathy, offering thoughts and prayers during this difficult time.
