San Jose resident Nicholas Welker, also known as “King ov Wrath,” has been handed a 3½-year prison sentence for making threats against a journalist. The 33-year-old was the leader of the racially or ethnically motivated violent extremist group, Feuerkrieg Division, according to prosecutors. Welker’s arrest took place in San Jose in March 2023, following accusations of posting a threat on a public online forum. The threat featured an image of a gun aimed at an unidentified journalist based in Brooklyn. The journalist and his employer were explicitly named, with Welker labeling him a “race traitor” and issuing a warning to cease reporting on Feuerkrieg.
Further exacerbating the situation, two underage members of the hate group directly sent the threat to the journalist’s Twitter account. Welker faced charges of conspiring to make threatening statements, which carries a maximum sentence of five years. However, he pleaded guilty and was sentenced to 44 months in federal prison on Friday, April 19, as confirmed by Breon Peace, the U.S. attorney for the Eastern District of New York.
During the case proceedings, Welker’s defense team requested his release to a San Jose residential drug treatment program. However, the judge sided with the prosecution’s argument that Welker posed a danger to the community and was a flight risk.
