Oakland police have identified the victim of a fatal shooting that occurred at a gas station on the 2200 block of East 12th Street. Courtney Merkt, a 27-year-old Pinole resident, was shot and killed inside a 2022 Tesla Model Y on March 23. The incident took place approximately 15 minutes before 6 a.m.
Authorities have revealed that three suspects were involved in the shooting, but their identities have not been disclosed to the public. No arrests have been made thus far, and the motive behind the crime remains unknown.
According to police, Merkt was observed parking the Tesla and entering the convenience store at the gas station shortly before the three suspects arrived in a Hyundai. One male suspect entered the same store. After Merkt returned to her vehicle and settled into the driver’s seat, two suspects opened fire at the Tesla before fleeing the scene. The abandoned car was later discovered in another area of Oakland a few days later.
Law enforcement officials have disclosed that the gas station had previously been the site of other shootings, and the three suspects are considered persons of interest in recent robberies that occurred prior to the homicide.
Tragically, Merkt became the 18th known homicide victim in Oakland in 2024. In an effort to gather information leading to the arrest of the perpetrator, the Oakland Police Department and Crime Stoppers of Oakland are offering a reward of up to $10,000.
