Michigan Teenager Warns Friend Before Fatal High-Speed Crash

A tragic incident unfolded in Kent County, Michigan, as a high-speed crash claimed the life of 18-year-old Nevaeh Downs. The fatal accident occurred on Thanksgiving night when Ella Vece, 19, was driving at an estimated speed of 100 miles per hour in Downs’ Volkswagen Jetta. The ill-fated attempt to jump a hill ended in disaster as the vehicle veered off the road and collided with a tree, according to the Kent County Sheriff’s Office and media reports.

Authorities have revealed that a recording from the scene captured Downs warning Vece to slow down due to an oncoming vehicle. Kent County Prosecutor Christopher R. Becker suggested that this warning may have distracted Vece, contributing to the tragic outcome. Becker characterized the incident as a result of “kids doing stupid things” that ultimately led to a devastating tragedy.

Downs, a recent high school graduate, was remembered as a thoughtful, strong, and caring individual in an online obituary and a GoFundMe page established to create a scholarship fund in her name at Grand Rapids Community College, where she was a student. Vece, who also suffered serious injuries in the crash, has been charged with reckless driving causing death, a felony. However, she pleaded to a lesser charge of a moving violation causing death, which is a misdemeanor, as part of a plea deal.

Vece is scheduled to be sentenced in June and could face up to a year in prison if convicted. Becker noted that the victim’s family did not wish to proceed with the felony charge, as they considered Vece to be like a daughter to them. Nevertheless, the prosecutor emphasized the importance of holding Vece accountable in some way. As part of her plea deal, Vece has lost her driving license for a year.

Becker also highlighted that the hill where the ill-fated jump was attempted has been the site of several deaths in recent years. The attorney representing Vece was not immediately available for comment.
