Man Charged with Gross Vehicular Manslaughter in Hit-and-Run Crash that Killed 6-Year-Old Boy

A 29-year-old man, Ramiro Rojas-Barrios, has been charged with gross vehicular manslaughter in connection with a hit-and-run crash that resulted in the death of a 6-year-old boy in Richmond last week. Prosecutors have revealed that this incident marked the second hit-and-run of the day for Rojas-Barrios, who was allegedly under the influence of alcohol and drugs at the time.

The young victim has been identified as Amadeo Alvarez Jr., a Little League baseball player known for his infectious smile and laughter. The tragic incident occurred on April 17 when Rojas-Barrios first collided with a parked car near a taco truck. Ignoring the consequences of his actions, he fled the scene, reaching speeds of 70 to 80 mph on Richmond city streets. Shortly after, he crashed into another vehicle carrying a family near Carlson and Cutting boulevards at approximately 7:20 p.m.

Despite attempting to flee once again, Rojas-Barrios was apprehended by good Samaritans. Tragically, the crash claimed the life of 6-year-old Amadeo and left one adult and two other children injured, although they are expected to survive. Authorities have reported that Rojas-Barrios admitted to consuming three shots of liquor and taking a painkiller before getting behind the wheel.

Court records indicate that Rojas-Barrios has been charged with three felonies: gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated, leaving the scene of an accident, and driving under the combined influence of alcohol and drugs causing injury. He is currently in custody at a Contra Costa jail.

Amadeo Alvarez Jr. was an active sports enthusiast who enjoyed playing baseball, basketball, and soccer. He earned the nickname “Big Bat” at the age of 4 due to his exceptional batting skills. Starting his baseball journey in Tara Hills, he joined a Richmond Little League team for 7-year-olds when he turned 5. His absence has left an irreplaceable void in the hearts of his family and friends.
