Knife-Wielding Man Shot and Killed After Stabbing Security Guard at Hollywood Metro Station

A knife-wielding man was shot and killed by a security guard at the Hollywood Metro station on Tuesday morning. The incident occurred at approximately 9:10 a.m. when officers from the Los Angeles Police Department responded to a report of a security guard being stabbed at 1500 North Vermont Avenue.

According to Officer Kevin Terzes, the man was found trespassing during a security sweep of the non-public area at the Vermont/Sunset station. A confrontation ensued between the security guard and the trespasser on the platform, resulting in the guard using pepper spray in an attempt to subdue the assailant. However, the man retaliated by stabbing the guard in the leg.

In response to the attack, the security guard discharged his firearm, shooting the assailant twice. The wounded man managed to flee the scene on foot and sought medical attention at a local hospital in Hollywood. Tragically, he was pronounced dead upon arrival.

The security guard, whose condition remains undisclosed, was also transported to a hospital for treatment.

This incident comes in the wake of a sick-out protest staged by hundreds of Metro drivers last week. The protest was a response to the increasing number of assaults on drivers, which have caused significant delays in bus routes. Approximately 10% of drivers for the Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority, totaling around 360 operators, called out sick during the protest.

Metro operators have criticized the agency for its inadequate response to the rising violence in recent weeks. Last year alone, the agency recorded 168 assaults, including stabbings and instances of being spat on.

Just two days prior to this incident, a driver on an L.A. Department of Transportation DASH bus was assaulted by a passenger, further highlighting the need for improved safety measures. The department has pledged to explore options to enhance security, including strengthening existing barriers between drivers and passengers.

The Los Angeles Department of Transportation emphasized its commitment to passenger and driver safety, stating that it is evaluating measures to provide better safeguards for all those using transit services.
