Former South African President Jacob Zuma Challenges Incumbent Cyril Ramaphosa in Upcoming Election

Former South African President Jacob Zuma, known for his controversial political career and numerous legal challenges, is now challenging incumbent President Cyril Ramaphosa in the upcoming general elections. Zuma, who was barred from running as a parliamentary candidate due to a previous criminal conviction, had the decision overturned by the Electoral Court, causing a stir within the ruling African National Congress (ANC).

Zuma’s political journey has been marked by a series of scandals, legal battles, and criminal allegations. In 2005, he faced corruption charges related to bribe payments received from a close associate, Schabir Shaik, and was implicated in a rape case. Although acquitted of rape in 2006, Zuma’s conduct during the trial, including controversial remarks about HIV transmission, drew significant criticism.

In 2007, Zuma won the ANC party leadership, leading to his election as president in 2009. However, his presidency was marred by controversies, including the “Zumaville” scandal, where public funds were used to upgrade his private residence. Zuma’s close relationship with the Gupta brothers, who allegedly used their influence to secure contracts and manipulate government appointments, further tarnished his reputation.

In 2018, Zuma resigned as president under pressure from the ANC, and a commission of inquiry, known as the Zondo Commission, was established to investigate allegations of state capture. Zuma’s legal troubles continued, and in 2021, he was found guilty of contempt of court for refusing to testify before the Zondo Commission. He was sentenced to 15 months in prison but was released after serving only two months due to health reasons, sparking violent protests in his home province of KwaZulu-Natal.

Despite his tumultuous past, Zuma has now emerged as a challenger to President Ramaphosa’s bid for a second term. His newly formed uMkhonto we Sizwe (MK) party has gained significant support, particularly in KwaZulu-Natal and Gauteng provinces. However, Zuma cannot constitutionally run for president again, having already served two terms.
