Bodies Found in Baja California Likely Those of Missing Australian and American Tourists

Three bodies recovered in Baja California are believed to be those of two Australian tourists and an American who went missing during a camping and surfing trip, according to the state prosecutor’s office. While forensic examination is pending for confirmation, physical characteristics, including hair and clothing, strongly suggest that the bodies belong to the missing individuals, as reported by local TV network Milenio, citing chief state prosecutor María Elena Andrade Ramírez.

An employee from the state prosecutors’ office, who spoke on condition of anonymity, stated that it is presumed the bodies under investigation are those of the missing tourists. Additionally, another body unrelated to the foreigners was discovered at the same location and will be subject to investigation. The bodies were found in a well near the township of Santo Tomás, close to where the missing men’s tents and truck were located on Thursday along the coast.

The missing individuals, identified as brothers Jake and Callum Robinson from Australia and American Jack Carter Rhoad, were reported missing after failing to arrive at their planned accommodations over the weekend. The U.S. State Department is closely monitoring the situation but has not provided further comment at this time.

Baja California prosecutors had initially questioned three individuals in connection with the case. On Friday, the office announced that the three suspects had been arrested and charged with a crime equivalent to kidnapping. It remains unclear if additional charges will be filed.

Chief state prosecutor Andrade Ramírez stated that evidence found alongside the abandoned tents linked the three suspects to the missing foreigners. Milenio reported that parts of the surfers’ stolen truck were discovered in another vehicle belonging to one of the suspects.

Debra Robinson, the mother of the missing Australians, made a plea for help in finding her sons on a local community Facebook page. She mentioned that her sons, Callum and Jake, had not been heard from since April 27 and had booked accommodations in Rosarito. The U.S. Embassy in Mexico City has not yet confirmed the identity of the American tourist, Jack Carter Rhoad.

  1. This is such a tragic and heartbreaking news. It’s devastating to hear about the loss of these young individuals who were simply enjoying a camping and surfing trip. It serves as a reminder of the unpredictable dangers that can arise during outdoor activities, even in seemingly safe and beautiful locations. My thoughts and condolences go out to the families and friends of the victims during this difficult time. May they find strength and support to cope with this unimaginable loss.
