Barstool Sports Founder Raises $1.5 Million for Slain NYPD Officer’s Family

Barstool Sports founder Dave Portnoy has successfully raised $1.5 million for the family of slain NYPD officer Jonathan Diller. Portnoy had pledged to match contributions made towards the cause, resulting in a total of $750,000 raised by donors. The funds will be directly provided to the grieving family.

Officer Jonathan Diller, aged 31, tragically lost his life during a routine traffic stop in Queens. The encounter escalated into a shootout with alleged career criminal Guy Rivera, aged 34, on Monday night. Portnoy expressed his condolences and made a plea for donations through a video posted on various platforms, including X and TikTok.

The Barstool Sports founder informed viewers that the incident involved two individuals with extensive criminal records who opened fire on Officer Diller. The slain officer leaves behind his wife, Stephanie, and their one-year-old son, Ryan. Portnoy mentioned that T-shirts were put on sale, generating approximately $240,000 in direct contributions to the family.

To support Officer Jonathan Diller’s young son, donations can be made through the Silver Shield Foundation. This organization, established in 1982 by the late New York Yankees owner George Steinbrenner, assists the families of NYPD officers and FDNY firefighters who lose their lives in the line of duty. Contributions can be made online at silvershieldfoundation.org/donate or sent to the Silver Shield Foundation’s address at 870 UN Plaza, 1st Floor, New York, NY 10017.

Portnoy further pledged to match the total amount raised by midnight, doubling the impact of the donations. He emphasized Barstool’s longstanding support for law enforcement and first responders, acknowledging the risks they face in their line of duty.

During the incident, Officer Diller’s partner fired two shots, one of which struck Rivera in the back. Rivera’s accomplice, identified as Lindy Jones, aged 41, was apprehended and charged with criminal possession of a weapon and defacing a weapon. Officer Diller, unfortunately, succumbed to his injuries below his protective vest and was pronounced dead at Jamaica Hospital.

I remember a similar incident in my community a few years ago. A local police officer was tragically killed in the line of duty, leaving behind a wife and two young children. The entire community was devastated by the loss, and everyone wanted to support the family in any way possible.
