18-Year-Old Victim Dies in Sugar House Shooting, 13th Homicide in Salt Lake City

An 18-year-old man, identified as J’kye Lovell Ray Watkins, has died from his injuries after a shooting in Sugar House, Salt Lake City. This incident marks the 13th homicide in Salt Lake City in 2023. The shooting took place near 909 East 2100 South early Sunday morning. Police received multiple calls about the incident around 1:30 a.m. Upon arrival, officers found the victim lying on the ground and immediately initiated life-saving measures. The victim was transported to a local hospital in extremely critical condition but succumbed to his injuries.

No arrests have been made in connection with the shooting at this time. Witnesses reported that the suspect or suspects fled the scene in a car, and the direction of their escape remains unknown. Police have closed off several blocks in the area and are conducting a search. Detectives are investigating whether a fight that occurred prior to the shooting is connected to the incident. Authorities believe there were several witnesses to the shooting who left before the arrival of law enforcement and are urging them to come forward with any information.

The Salt Lake City Police Department has requested anyone with information, including photos or videos, to contact them at 801-799-3000. Detectives do not believe there is an immediate threat to the public.
