USTA Launches Comprehensive Review of Safeguarding Policies to Protect Athletes from Sexual Misconduct

In a groundbreaking move to ensure the safety and well-being of athletes, the U.S. Tennis Association (USTA) has embarked on a comprehensive review of its safeguarding policies. The organization, responsible for running the prestigious U.S. Open and overseeing tennis in the United States, has enlisted the expertise of two esteemed lawyers from the renowned Washington-based firm, Debevoise & Plimpton LLP.

The announcement, made by Lew Sherr, the CEO and executive director of the USTA, has sent shockwaves through the tennis community. In an email obtained exclusively by The Associated Press, Sherr emphasized the USTA’s commitment to preventing harm and responding to reports of inappropriate conduct. The review, led by David O’Neil and Mary Beth Hogan, will focus on the organization’s policies and procedures for preventing, reporting, and responding to abuse, including sexual misconduct.

This development comes on the heels of a high-profile lawsuit filed against the USTA by tennis player Kylie McKenzie. In her courageous legal action, McKenzie accused her former coach, Anibal Aranda, of sexually abusing her during her time at one of the USTA’s training centers. The lawsuit alleges that Aranda, who was employed by the USTA for several years before being terminated, exploited his position to prey on vulnerable female athletes.

It is important to note that the review is not an investigation into specific allegations of sexual misconduct. Instead, it aims to assess the USTA’s overall approach to athlete safety and its response to misconduct reports. Sherr’s email assures that the Debevoise lawyers will have unrestricted access to all employees involved in these aspects of the organization, ensuring a thorough and impartial evaluation.

The USTA’s commitment to safeguarding athletes is commendable, as it demonstrates a proactive stance in addressing the issue of sexual misconduct within the sport. By engaging external experts, the organization is taking a significant step towards creating a safer environment for all players.

As the review unfolds, the tennis world eagerly awaits the findings and recommendations that will undoubtedly shape the future of athlete protection. The USTA’s dedication to transparency and accountability sets a powerful precedent for other sports organizations to follow.

In the pursuit of justice and the preservation of integrity, the USTA’s comprehensive review of safeguarding policies is a pivotal moment in the fight against sexual misconduct in sports. It is a testament to the unwavering commitment to the safety and well-being of athletes, ensuring that the tennis court remains a sanctuary for talent, passion, and fair play.
