A suspect has been apprehended by the Brentwood Police Department in connection to a theft that occurred at Michaels on April 30. The incident unfolded around 8:30 p.m. when officers received a report of a theft amounting to approximately $1,400 worth of merchandise from the popular arts and crafts store. The alleged perpetrator was identified as 32-year-old Matthew Davis, a resident of Antioch.
Upon arriving at the scene, law enforcement officers spotted Davis in the vicinity of the store. However, upon noticing their presence, the suspect swiftly fled on a bicycle, abandoning the stolen items. In a desperate attempt to evade capture, Davis continued pedaling away from the pursuing officers until he ultimately collided with a parked patrol car. Fortunately, no injuries were sustained, and Davis was promptly taken into custody.
Davis now faces charges of shoplifting, felony probation violation, and court order violation. It has been revealed that he was previously issued a court order to stay away from Kohl’s, a separate retail establishment. Under California law, due to the value of the stolen merchandise exceeding $950, this offense is classified as grand theft, which can be prosecuted as either a misdemeanor or a felony.
