The sentencing for Jordan Piper, the father convicted of killing his 11-year-old son, Roman Lopez, has been delayed. Roman Lopez was reported missing on January 11, 2020, in Placerville and was later found dead in a storage bin in the basement of his family’s home. Investigators determined that he was malnourished and dehydrated. Jordan Piper was arrested almost a year later for his son’s murder, along with his stepmother, Lindsay Jordan Piper, who is currently serving time in federal prison for sexual exploitation of a minor.
The sentencing was scheduled to take place via Zoom, but Jordan Piper did not appear. His defense attorney, Tasha Suin, stated that her client was doing everything he could to communicate with the correctional officer and be moved to a different room for the hearing. Both the defense attorney and the deputy district attorney, Jay Lyndon, expressed frustration with the lack of communication from the Federal Bureau of Prisons regarding Piper’s appearance.
Ten people appeared via Zoom to give Victim Impact statements, but the postponement of the sentencing announcement left some emotional. The court stated that the statements could have been taken without Piper present, but it was important for him to hear how his actions impacted the victims’ lives.
Jordan Piper’s family, who traveled from Michigan, will now have to make another trip for the rescheduled sentencing.
