Man Arrested for Attacking Plainclothes Police Officer Assigned to Protect San Jose Mayor

A man was apprehended on Tuesday evening after allegedly assaulting a plainclothes police officer assigned to protect San Jose Mayor Mahan. The incident occurred shortly after 6 p.m., as stated by the San Jose Police Department. Mayor Mahan was being interviewed by a journalist when an individual began exhibiting erratic behavior towards him and his staff, according to police reports. In response, a plainclothes police officer, responsible for the mayor’s security, intervened to de-escalate the situation.

Despite the officer’s attempts to calm the suspect, he became increasingly agitated and started threatening the officer while advancing towards him. Video footage shared on social media captured the suspect punching the officer in the head. The officer, in an effort to detain the suspect, engaged in a struggle that lasted several minutes. With the assistance of several bystanders, the officer was eventually able to subdue and apprehend the suspect.

The suspect has been taken into custody and booked into Santa Clara County jail on charges that include felony battery on a police officer. The injured officer was evaluated at a local hospital for minor injuries. The motive and circumstances surrounding the incident are currently under investigation.

In a statement issued by Tasha Dean, Mayor Mahan’s chief communications officer, the mayor expressed gratitude towards his security team and the police department. Dean commended the officer’s heroic actions, highlighting the effectiveness of their de-escalation training and their commitment to community trust. Mayor Mahan conveyed his well wishes for the officer’s swift recovery and emphasized his dedication to creating a safer city for all residents.
