Aydos Sadykov, a Kyiv-based journalist and prominent Kazakh dissident, has tragically passed away in Ukraine two weeks after being shot outside his home. Sadykov, known for his outspoken criticism of Kazakhstan’s leadership, was shot in the head while seated in a car with his wife on June 18. Ukrainian prosecutors suspect that the attack was meticulously planned and executed by two suspected assassins from Kazakhstan.
Natalya Sadykova, the grieving wife of Aydos Sadykov, has publicly blamed Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev for her husband’s death. In a heartfelt Facebook post, she mourned the loss of her beloved husband, who dedicated his life to Kazakhstan and fell victim to ruthless killers. Sadykova firmly holds President Tokayev responsible, stating that her husband’s death rests on his conscience.
According to Ukraine’s prosecutor general’s office, two Kazakh citizens, one of whom is a former policeman, are suspected of carrying out the shooting. Both suspects fled the country on the same day, seeking refuge in Moldova. While Kazakhstan has apprehended one of the suspects, Altai Zhakanbayev, they have refused to extradite him to Ukraine. The second suspect remains at large.
President Tokayev has instructed Kazakh law enforcement agencies to collaborate with Ukraine in locating the suspects. His spokesperson, as reported by Russian news agencies, stated that Astana is prepared to cooperate with Ukraine, including involving Interpol in the investigation.
Human Rights Watch has called for a thorough investigation into the attack on Sadykov, who ran a YouTube channel frequently critical of Kazakhstan’s former president, Nursultan Nazarbayev, and his successor, President Tokayev. Hugh Williamson, Europe and Central Asia director at Human Rights Watch, expressed deep concern over the broad daylight attack in Kyiv’s city center. Williamson urged Ukrainian authorities to ensure Sadykov’s safety, identify the assailant, bring them to justice, and uncover the mastermind behind the attack. He also emphasized the importance of Kazakhstan demonstrating its commitment to the rule of law throughout this process.
