The ongoing racketeering conspiracy trial involving Grammy-winning rapper Young Thug, born Jeffery Williams, has now become the longest criminal trial in Georgia’s state history. In the opening statements, the prosecution portrayed Young Slime Life as a criminal street gang led by Williams, alleging that it dominated the Cleveland Avenue community of Fulton County for a decade. They argued that Williams is not involved in running a criminal street gang and does not know most of the people mentioned in the indictment.
Notable witnesses in the trial so far include Walter “DK” Murphy, a childhood friend of Williams and alleged co-founder of YSL, and Trontavious “Tick” Stephens, another alleged co-founder. Both witnesses reached plea deals requiring their truthful testimony. Kenneth “Lil Woody” Copeland, an aspiring rapper associated with YSL, caused controversy during his testimony, leading to calls for a mistrial.
The trial has also seen dramatic moments, including Brian Steel’s contempt charge after confronting Judge Glanville about a secret meeting between the judge, prosecutors, and Copeland. Steel was taken into custody but later granted bond by Georgia’s Supreme Court.
