Mark Campbell, an inmate convicted of first-degree sexual assault of a child in 2010, is currently being housed in a women’s prison in Fond du Lac, Wisconsin. The Wisconsin Department of Corrections records confirm this placement, which is intended for female offenders.
Campbell was sentenced to 34 years in prison for his crime in 2007. In 2020, he filed a lawsuit against the state seeking gender transition surgery, and U.S. District Judge James Peterson ruled in his favor, stating that the procedure should be provided at the expense of taxpayers.
Wisconsin State Rep. Janel Brandtjen criticized the decision to house Campbell in a women’s prison, calling it “outrageous” and expressing concern about the potential for manipulation and harm to female inmates.
According to data obtained by journalist Mary Margaret Olohan, over 50% of the 161 men identifying as women housed in Wisconsin DOC facilities have been convicted of at least one count of sexual assault or sexual abuse.
