Vanity Fair Reporter Removed from Federal Murder-for-Hire Trial Jury for Social Media Post

A Vanity Fair reporter, Delia Cai, has been dismissed from the jury in a federal murder-for-hire trial taking place in Brooklyn. Cai’s removal came after she posted a social media item on X, referring to a “hot FBI agent” involved in the case. The trial involves Antony Abreu, a convicted drug trafficker from Queens, who is accused of carrying out a murder on behalf of a Manhattan real estate developer in 2019.

Cai’s now-deleted X post on Monday read, “didn’t get to see the eclipse bc I’m on federal jury duty but I did get to look at a hot FBI agent.” The New York Daily News first reported her dismissal from the jury. In subsequent posts, Cai expressed her regret and apologized for her actions. She mentioned that she was unaware of the rules surrounding jury duty and acknowledged the seriousness of the murder trial.

US District Judge Carol Bagley Amon reprimanded Cai and removed her from the case on Tuesday. Cai humorously referred to the judge’s decision as being sent to “horny jail.” She admitted that her post was inappropriate and acknowledged the consequences of her actions.

Cai had been selected to serve on the jury for the trial of Antony Abreu, who is charged with the murder of Xin “Chris” Gu outside a Queens karaoke bar in February 2019. Abreu allegedly carried out the hit on behalf of his former boss, Qing Ming “Allen” Yu, who was convicted in a murder-for-hire plot last fall. Yu allegedly sought revenge against Gu, his former protege and project manager, after Gu started his own business and poached several of Yu’s clients.
