Two 19-year-olds, Luke Allen and Ty Muno, were apprehended by state officials last month on a public road within Oprah Winfrey’s Hawaii ranch, suspected of engaging in illegal night hunting. The incident occurred just before midnight on June 21, when officers from the Department of Land and Natural Resources (DLNR) caught the duo using a hunting spotlight on a public road that traverses the talk show host’s property in Kula.
Although Allen and Muno were not actively hunting at the time of their arrest, DLNR’s Division of Conservation and Resources Enforcement discovered a loaded shotgun, a loaded rifle, and ammunition in their truck. Further investigation revealed that the pair had allegedly been hunting on Winfrey’s private land without permission, with Allen possessing an unregistered rifle.
Following their apprehension, Allen and Muno were taken to the Maui Police station in Wailuku for booking. The case has since been referred to the Maui County Prosecutors Office for review.
Invasive axis deer pose a significant problem on Maui and other Hawaiian islands. DLNR had previously reached out to Upcountry ranchers to collaborate on preventing illegal poaching in the area, and Winfrey’s production company, Harpo, confirmed their cooperation in an emailed statement to The Associated Press. Notably, the arrests did not occur on Winfrey’s property.
