Three former deputies from the Chesterfield County Sheriff’s Office in South Carolina have been arrested and charged with misconduct in office, criminal conspiracy, and aggravated breach of the peace. The deputies, identified as Justin Tyler Reichard, Darien Myles Roseau, and Killian Daniel Loflin, were taken into custody on Monday following an investigation by the State Law Enforcement Division (SLED).
The charges stem from a series of hoax phone calls made on February 4, where five reports of a dead body were falsely reported to either a convenience store or the police in the small towns of Cheraw, Chesterfield, McBee, and Pageland. In response to each call, officers and emergency workers were dispatched until it was determined that the reports were unfounded.
The motive behind the hoax calls remains unclear, as investigators have not disclosed why the deputies made them or provided any additional details. The three former deputies were booked at the Chesterfield County Detention Center, and it is currently unknown if they have legal representation.
The Chesterfield County Sheriff’s Office had requested the SLED investigation, and while the state agents referred to the arrested individuals as “former deputies,” the sheriff’s office has not confirmed whether they have been terminated, only stating that they were suspended last week.
Residents in the affected towns expressed their disappointment and disbelief at the actions of law enforcement officers. Briana Davenport, a resident of McBee, remarked, “Prank calls happen, but you don’t expect it from cops. Because we’re supposed to be calling them to help us out. I think it’s messed up for it to happen like that.”
