The suspect involved in the attempted assassination of Slovakia’s populist prime minister, Robert Fico, is now facing terror charges, according to the country’s prosecutor-general. Initially charged with attempted murder, the suspect, identified as J.C., had the charges upgraded based on evidence obtained by investigators. Prosecutor-General Maroš Žilinka did not provide immediate details regarding the evidence.
Government officials initially believed the attack to be politically motivated and carried out by a “lone wolf.” However, they later suggested the involvement of a “third party” acting on behalf of the perpetrator. Prime Minister Fico, who has been recovering from multiple wounds sustained during the assassination attempt on May 15, was shot in the abdomen while greeting supporters in Handlova. The assailant was promptly apprehended and remains in custody as ordered by the court.
Fico, a divisive figure in Slovakia and beyond, returned to power for the fourth time last year after his leftist party, Smer (Direction), won the parliamentary election.
