Stormy Daniels Testifies in Hush Money Case Against Former President Trump

Porn performer Stormy Daniels took the witness stand on Tuesday in the hush money case against former President Trump. The trial, now in its third week of testimony in Manhattan, marks the first criminal trial of a former American president. Daniels’ testimony aired their alleged sexual encounter and the payment she received to keep it quiet, as prosecutors argue that Trump paid her to bury negative stories about him during his 2016 presidential campaign.

During her testimony, Daniels, whose real name is Stephanie Clifford, revealed that she first met Trump at a 2006 Lake Tahoe celebrity golf outing. Trump, who referred to her as “the smart one,” invited her to dinner, which she accepted to avoid dining with her co-workers and potentially advance her career. Trump’s bodyguard obtained her number, and they later met in his penthouse. Daniels testified that she found Trump in his underwear upon returning from the bathroom, and the encounter quickly escalated into a sexual encounter. Although she did not feel physically or verbally threatened, Daniels expressed her desire to leave.

Daniels denied that Trump ever instructed her to keep their encounter confidential. In 2011, she discovered that a magazine had learned about their story and agreed to do an interview for $15,000 to control the narrative. However, the story never ran. In 2016, as Trump ran for president, Daniels authorized her manager to shop the story around, but it initially garnered little interest from news outlets. This changed after the release of the “Access Hollywood” tape, in which Trump made derogatory comments about women. Daniels learned that Trump’s then-lawyer, Michael Cohen, wanted to buy her silence.

Trump’s lawyers attempted to halt Daniels’ testimony, arguing that it was irrelevant to the case. However, the judge rejected their motion, criticizing the defense for not raising objections earlier. Trump’s lawyers also sought to undermine Daniels’ credibility, suggesting that she was motivated by money and highlighting inconsistencies in her account over the years. Daniels affirmed her desire for Trump to be held accountable but denied attempting to extort money from him.

Throughout Daniels’ testimony, Trump whispered to his attorney and appeared visibly uncomfortable when she recounted details about their alleged dinner and his sleeping arrangements. Trump later called it “a very revealing day” but claimed that the prosecutors’ case was “totally falling apart.”
