State Prison Officer Assaulted by Inmate at Sierra Conservation Center Raises Concerns

A state prison officer at the Sierra Conservation Center (SCC) in Jamestown, California, was brutally assaulted by an inmate, raising concerns about the safety of correctional staff. The incident, which occurred either on Saturday or Sunday (conflicting reports), has prompted KCRA 3 to seek answers from the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation (CDCR).

The CDCR, responsible for the state’s prison system, has been tight-lipped about the details surrounding the attack. The injured employee has been discharged from the hospital, but the CDCR has not disclosed any specifics about the circumstances of the assault.

The inmate involved in the incident is serving a life sentence, although the nature of their crime remains unknown. The Sierra Conservation Center, located in Jamestown, is renowned for its inmate fire training program in collaboration with CAL FIRE. The facility houses minimum to medium custody inmates in dormitory-type facilities, as well as high to medium custody inmates in cell blocks.

It is unclear whether the inmate accused in the assault is part of the fire training program. The CDCR spokesperson stated that the inmate has been placed in restricted housing while the investigation takes place. However, it remains uncertain whether the inmate is still at SCC or has been transferred to another facility.

The prison’s Investigative Services Unit is currently handling the case. Glenn Staley, the President of the California Correctional Peace Officers Association (CCPOA), expressed outrage over the incident, emphasizing the need to support the officer involved and provide assistance.

As more information becomes available, KCRA 3 will continue to follow this developing story, shedding light on the safety concerns faced by correctional staff and the ongoing investigation into this violent assault at the Sierra Conservation Center.
