Pickup Truck Driver Charged with Attempted Murder in Road Rage Stabbing

A road rage incident turned violent on Tuesday night as a pickup truck driver was charged with attempted murder after a stabbing that spanned from Queens to the Upper East Side of New York City. Antal Lakatos, 28, driving a Mercedes sedan, deliberately struck Shaker Ahmad’s pickup truck on the Queensboro Bridge at approximately 6:50 p.m., according to authorities.

Following the collision, Lakatos exited his vehicle and opened the trunk, prompting Ahmad to flee the scene in his pickup truck, as reported by police sources. However, Lakatos pursued Ahmad, catching up to him at the intersection of East 62nd Street and Lexington Avenue. This time, Lakatos rear-ended the pickup truck, causing it to collide with a light pole, sources and law enforcement officials stated.

Coincidentally, patrol officers from the 19th Precinct were present at a nearby Smashburger restaurant and immediately responded upon hearing the crash. They witnessed Ahmad exiting his truck and approaching Lakatos’ Mercedes, where he proceeded to stab him multiple times while he remained seated in the driver’s seat, according to sources familiar with the incident. Lakatos, injured from the attack, fell out of his car, and officers promptly provided assistance while another officer handcuffed Ahmad, the sources added.

Ahmad now faces charges of attempted murder, assault, and criminal possession of a weapon, as confirmed by the police. Lakatos, on the other hand, was transported to Weill Cornell Medical Center, where he is currently in stable condition. He has been charged with attempted assault, according to law enforcement.

Notably, Ahmad had previously served 18 months in prison between February 2016 and August 2018 for a second-degree assault conviction, as indicated by State Corrections records. Lakatos also has a criminal record, having been arrested in June 2019 for driving with a suspended license and more recently, approximately two months ago, for grand larceny auto in Queens, the police revealed.
