NHL Reinstates Joel Quenneville, Stan Bowman, and Al MacIsaac Following Handling of Sexual Assault Allegations

The National Hockey League (NHL) announced on Monday that Joel Quenneville, Stan Bowman, and Al MacIsaac have been reinstated, marking their return to the league after being banned for their handling of sexual assault allegations within the Chicago Blackhawks organization. The allegations were made by former Blackhawks player Kyle Beach against the team’s video coach, Brad Aldrich, during the team’s Stanley Cup run in 2010.

Quenneville, who had been serving as the head coach of the Florida Panthers, resigned in October 2021 when the details of the Blackhawks’ mishandling of the sexual assault allegations came to light. Bowman, the former general manager of the Blackhawks, also resigned from his position during the same period. MacIsaac, the team’s senior vice president of hockey operations, was also implicated in the investigation.

An independent investigation conducted by the law firm Jenner & Block revealed that the Blackhawks’ management had been aware of the allegations but chose not to address them until after the postseason. Aldrich was ultimately given the option to resign or be terminated. Quenneville claimed to be unaware of the allegations, but the investigation report indicated that he was present in the meeting where management decided to delay taking action.

In a recent interview with TSN, Beach stated that there was no way Quenneville could deny knowledge of the incident. The NHL, in its statement, acknowledged that the responses of Quenneville, Bowman, and MacIsaac at the time were unacceptable. However, the league noted that the three individuals had demonstrated sincere remorse and had engaged in activities during their time away from the game that showed greater awareness of their responsibilities, particularly as leaders within the NHL.

The NHL has now made Quenneville, Bowman, and MacIsaac eligible to seek employment immediately, with the possibility of being hired by a team as early as July 10. The league expects them to continue their commitment to personal improvement and addressing acts of abuse in any future capacity with the NHL or its clubs.

It remains to be seen how quickly the former Blackhawks executives will find new positions. According to Daily Faceoff, Bowman is currently considered the front-runner for the vacant general manager job with the Edmonton Oilers.
