New York State Attorney General Urges Car Manufacturers to Address Car Theft Crisis

New York State Attorney General Letitia James, along with a coalition of 22 attorneys general, has called on Kia America and Hyundai Motor Company to take immediate action to address the ongoing issue of car thefts in New York State. The attorneys general are urging the car manufacturers to equip their vehicles with anti-theft immobilizer technology to combat the rising rates of car thefts.

In a letter addressed to Kia and Hyundai, the attorney generals expressed concern over the sustained high rates of car thefts, which not only harm consumers but also contribute to a decline in public safety. The thefts often involve reckless driving and the commission of other crimes, posing a threat to communities.

The letter also highlighted the impact on Hyundai and Kia owners, who are now facing difficulties in insuring their vehicles. Major insurance companies have started refusing to provide coverage for the models most susceptible to theft. This situation has left some owners unable to legally drive their cars in states where insurance is mandatory.

Hyundai responded to the concerns, stating that all vehicles produced since November 2021 are equipped with an engine immobilizer as standard equipment. However, the attorney generals are calling for swift and comprehensive action from both Kia and Hyundai to address the crisis.
