Michigan Father Found Guilty of Manslaughter in Connection with School Shooting

James Crumbley, the father who purchased the gun used by his son in a Michigan school shooting that claimed the lives of four students, has been found guilty of manslaughter. This verdict follows the recent conviction of his wife, Jennifer Crumbley, on identical charges. These separate trials mark a significant moment in U.S. legal history, as it is the first time a parent has been convicted for their child’s involvement in a mass shooting.

The Crumbleys were accused of buying the handgun that their 15-year-old son, Ethan Crumbley, used during the tragic incident at Oxford High School on November 30, 2021. They were also accused of neglecting Ethan’s mental health needs and failing to inform the school about their purchase during a meeting about his behavior just hours before the shooting.

Ethan pleaded guilty to 24 charges related to the shooting, including the first-degree murders of his fellow students. He was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole last year. James Crumbley, who has been in custody since December 2021, was convicted in the same Pontiac courtroom as his wife. Both parents will be sentenced at a later date and could face a maximum of 15 years in prison.

During the trial, county prosecutor Karen McDonald emphasized that James Crumbley was being held accountable for his own actions and inactions, stating that he “doesn’t get a pass because somebody else” pulled the trigger. James’s attorney, Mariell Lehman, expressed disappointment with the verdict but acknowledged the difficulty faced by the jury in reaching their decision.

Following the verdict, Steve St. Juliana, the father of one of the victims, spoke at a news conference and expressed gratitude towards the prosecutors and law enforcement involved in the case. However, he emphasized that more needs to be done to address the ongoing issue of mass shootings and the loss of innocent lives. St. Juliana called for a collective effort to address the root causes, including mental health issues and gun control.
