Massive Gold Heist Uncovered at Toronto Airport; Five Arrested, Three Suspects at Large

In what authorities are calling the largest gold heist in Canadian history, police have arrested multiple individuals and are seeking three more suspects in connection with the theft of 6,600 gold bars worth over 20 million Canadian dollars ($14m) from a Toronto Pearson International Airport facility last year. Peel Regional Police Chief Nishan Duraiappah revealed the details of the well-organized criminal operation during a press conference on Wednesday.

The stolen gold bars, weighing 400kg (882 pounds), were part of a shipment from a Swiss refinery. Alongside the gold, 2.5 million Canadian dollars ($1.8m) in foreign bank notes were also taken from an Air Canada facility on April 17, 2023. The heist was executed by a group of criminals who meticulously planned the operation.

Nine suspects have been named in connection with the heist, including two Air Canada employees, a jewelry store owner, and the alleged getaway driver. Five of the suspects have been arrested in Canada and released on bail pending trial. Another suspect, originally from Brampton, Ontario, was apprehended in Pennsylvania with illegal firearms and remains in custody in the United States. Canada-wide arrest warrants have been issued for the remaining three suspects.

Authorities suspect that some of the individuals involved in the gold heist were also engaged in illegal firearms trafficking. During the investigation, police seized 430,000 Canadian dollars ($312,000) believed to be proceeds from the sale of the stolen gold. Additionally, six “crudely made” gold bracelets, valued at approximately 89,000 Canadian dollars ($65,000), were recovered.

Air Canada has taken action in response to the incident, suspending one cargo division employee who has been charged in connection with the theft. The other employee, who worked in the same department at the time of the heist, had already left the airline before the charges were announced.
