Manhunt Ends in Fatal Police Shooting in Brooklyn

A three-day manhunt in Brooklyn came to a close on Wednesday morning when police fatally shot Jason Pass, the suspect accused of shooting and killing his neighbor and stepson on Sunday. Pass was found hiding inside a vehicle in Bath Beach. Police are awaiting a search warrant to determine if the alleged murder weapon is still inside the vehicle. The gun used in the crime was not registered to Pass.

The incident unfolded at the corner of Bay 44th Street and Harway Avenue, where evidence cones were scattered and police officers were conducting investigations. The scene, which had been tense earlier, had calmed down by late Wednesday morning.

According to NYPD Chief of Department Jeffrey Maddrey, officers established dialogue with Pass, but the encounter turned deadly when Pass lunged at one of the officers. In response, multiple officers discharged their weapons, shooting Pass. Neighbor Rebecca Maristany reported hearing multiple gunshots within minutes of seeing police officers on the corner.

The person shot by the police was identified as 47-year-old Jason Pass, who had been on the run since allegedly killing his two upstairs neighbors on Sunday. NYPD Chief of Patrol John Chell stated that officers attempted to engage in a conversation with Pass for 15 minutes before being forced to shoot him three times in the chest and once in the leg. Chell added that Pass had made statements indicating that the situation would not end well.

Police used a license plate reader to locate Pass in his black Honda CRV. As officers approached the vehicle, Pass exited with a knife in hand and fled on foot. Pass is accused of killing his upstairs neighbor, Bladimy Mathurin, and his stepson, Chinwai Mode, following ongoing noise disputes. The shootings occurred five miles away from the Bath Beach location, leaving residents shocked by the escalation of violence in their neighborhood.

The motive behind Pass hiding out in that section of Brooklyn remains unclear. Police are currently investigating whether he had any connections in the area or if he had been hiding in his car throughout the manhunt.
