A Long Island driver, Steven Schwally, who is currently awaiting arraignment for a fatal crash at Hawaii Nail & Spa, had a prior arrest for drunk driving, according to records reviewed by The Post. The incident occurred on March 25, 2013, in Dix Hills, when Schwally drunkenly collided with a mailbox and subsequently passed out behind the wheel. The police report states that Schwally was found asleep in the driver’s seat with the vehicle’s engine running and keys in the ignition at the intersection of Millet Street and Village Drive West, a short distance away from the scene of the accident.
Schwally pleaded guilty to the drunk driving charge and received a three-year probation sentence. However, on Friday, he allegedly drove under the influence again, crashing into the nail salon and causing the death of four individuals, including NYPD officer Emilia Rennhack. Rennhack, 30, was at the salon getting her nails done for a fellow officer’s wedding when the tragic incident occurred. The other victims were identified as Jiancai Chen, 37, Yan Xu, 41, and Meizi Zhang, 50.
Following the crash, Schwally was hospitalized for his injuries at Good Samaritan Hospital. On Monday, he was discharged and escorted by police to Suffolk County court to face new charges. Currently, he has been charged with driving while intoxicated, but additional charges are expected.
