Kenyan police have apprehended more than 270 individuals who were allegedly involved in criminal activities during antigovernment protests across the country. The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) stated that security forces identified suspects masquerading as protesters and engaging in violent acts, leading to their arrest. In Nairobi, the capital, 204 suspects were detained, while an additional 68 were apprehended in other areas of the country.
The DCI has deployed meticulous investigators to pursue suspects captured on CCTV cameras and mobile phone recordings, who were seen violently robbing, stealing, and destroying properties and businesses of innocent citizens. Interior Cabinet Secretary Kithure Kindiki condemned the protests, describing them as an “orgy of violence” and warning that the government would take action against those involved in anarchic chaos and cruel plunder.
The demonstrations initially began in response to a controversial finance bill that introduced new taxes, exacerbating the hardships faced by a population already grappling with a cost-of-living crisis. Although President William Ruto later abandoned the measure, protesters have continued to demand his resignation, using the hashtag “RutoMustGo” in a broader campaign against his rule. They have also rejected his calls for dialogue.
The Kenya National Commission on Human Rights (KNCHR) reported that 39 people have been killed and 361 injured during two weeks of rallies, with the most severe violence occurring in Nairobi on June 25. The KNCHR condemned the use of excessive and disproportionate force against demonstrators. Activists have accused the government of unleashing infiltrators to discredit their movement and are now calling for the dispersal of protests.
