Former President Trump Expresses Frustration Over Potential Conflict Between Trial and Son’s Graduation

Former President Donald Trump voiced his discontent with Judge Juan M. Merchan during his first criminal trial in Manhattan. Trump expressed concern that the trial may clash with his son Barron’s high school graduation, scheduled for May 17. Trump, who has repeatedly labeled the prosecution by Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg as a political “witch hunt,” accused the judge of preventing him from evading what he perceives as a fraudulent trial.

Trump asserted that missing Barron’s graduation is part of a broader left-wing effort to hinder his presidential campaign. He also lamented his inability to attend U.S. Supreme Court arguments related to criminal charges against defendants involved in the January 6 insurrection. Trump claimed that these circumstances align with the desires of radical-left Democrats, characterizing them as election interference.

The former president is currently on trial in Manhattan for allegedly falsifying nearly three dozen business records to conceal a payment made to porn star Stormy Daniels in the final weeks of the 2016 election. Daniels claims to have had a brief sexual encounter with Trump in 2006, when he was married to Melania Trump and Barron was an infant.

The trial’s first day primarily consisted of motions, maneuvering by the prosecution and defense, and jury selection, which is expected to take several weeks. Reporters present in the courtroom noted Trump’s apparent fatigue and irritation during Monday’s proceedings. White House correspondent Maggie Haberman observed that the 77-year-old former president appeared to nod off at times, with his head drooping onto his chest.

Judge Merchan’s decisions on Monday indicated that the trial would delve into unsavory aspects of Trump’s personal life, including the infamous Access Hollywood tape where he boasted about groping women. The defense also sought to suppress stories related to Trump’s alleged affair with former Playboy model Karen McDougal, which occurred during his marriage to Melania Trump.
