Former MMA Fighter Javier Baez Subdues Knife-Wielding Attacker in Florida Parking Lot

Former MMA fighter Javier Baez successfully defended himself against a knife-wielding attacker in the parking lot of his apartment complex in Cutler Bay, Florida. The incident occurred on Wednesday when Baez was approached by a stranger, identified as 50-year-old Omar Marrero, who aggressively brandished a 14-inch knife. Marrero later charged at Baez with a foot-long knife.

Baez, who has not competed professionally since 2018, managed to subdue Marrero by avoiding his charge, slamming him to the ground, and applying an arm-triangle chokehold. The incident was captured on video by UFC fighter Terrance McKinney and shared on social media.

According to Baez, Marrero had been involved in a heated argument with a woman before targeting him. Baez warned Marrero to leave him alone and called the police. After subduing Marrero, Baez contacted the authorities, who subsequently arrested the attacker.

Marrero is now facing two felony charges. Baez credited his training at Florida’s MMA Masters gym for his ability to react instinctively during the altercation. He described his actions as “second nature” and emphasized the importance of practicing self-defense techniques regularly.
