Former Detroit Lions cornerback Cameron Sutton turned himself in to authorities on Sunday, ending weeks of evading law enforcement. The Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office had been searching for Sutton since March 7, following an alleged domestic violence incident that took place in a home in Lutz, Florida. A warrant for his arrest was issued on the same day.
Sutton, 29, is now facing serious charges, including domestic battery by strangulation, which is a third-degree felony carrying a maximum penalty of five years in prison, according to ESPN. The Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office released a brief clip of Sutton surrendering at the Orient Road Jail, where he arrived at 8:24 p.m. wearing a white long-sleeve shirt and mustard-colored shorts.
Sheriff Chad Chronister expressed his satisfaction with Sutton’s decision to turn himself in, stating, “After weeks of evading law enforcement, this man has finally made the right choice to turn himself in. Domestic violence has no place in our community, and no one is above the law here in Hillsborough County. My thoughts are with this woman as she continues to heal from this man’s gruesome actions.”
Sutton had been at the Lions facility when the organization learned about the warrant. The team advised him to surrender, urging him to “do the right thing” before their front office meeting. However, Sutton failed to comply, leading the Lions to release him. Fox 2 reported that evidence suggested the alleged victim had visible wounds on her body.
Cameron Sutton had recently signed a three-year, $33 million contract with the Lions for the 2023 season after spending six seasons with the Pittsburgh Steelers. In the 2023-24 regular season, he recorded one interception and 65 combined tackles.
