Serbian police are currently investigating a crossbow attack on an Israeli embassy guard in Belgrade as a possible terrorist act. The assailant, who approached the guard multiple times inquiring about the location of a museum, fired a crossbow and wounded a police officer stationed at the embassy. In response, the officer fired several shots at the attacker, resulting in his death.
The injured police officer was struck in the neck by an arrow and was immediately transported to a nearby hospital. He underwent surgery to remove the arrow and is currently in stable condition. The identity of the assailant is yet to be determined.
Interior Minister Ivica Dacic labeled the incident as a “terrorist attack against Serbia” and stated that investigations are underway to determine the motives behind the attack. One individual was arrested near the scene, and authorities are exploring possible connections to foreign terrorist groups.
Israel’s embassy in Belgrade remains closed, and no embassy employees were harmed during the attack. The Israeli foreign ministry has stated that they are investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident.
President Aleksandar Vucic visited the wounded officer in the hospital and vowed to take decisive action against terrorism in Serbia. Prime Minister Milos Vucevic condemned the attack as a “heinous terrorist act” and emphasized that it was the act of an individual, dissociating it from any religion or nation.
The Serbian authorities have promised a comprehensive crackdown on terrorism and have already made several arrests related to the incident. The investigation is ongoing, and further details are expected to emerge.
