In the early hours of Sunday, a Virginia State University police officer suffered critical injuries in a shooting incident near the VSU campus in Petersburg, Virginia. The officer, responding to a disturbance, was rushed to VCU Medical Center with life-threatening wounds. Chesterfield County police reported the incident occurred at approximately 1:34 a.m. The assailant fled off campus grounds before discharging their weapon, and currently remains at large. As a safety measure, VSU Police Chief David Bragg has announced a lockdown on the campus while investigations continue.
