In a series of anti-terror raids conducted across Sydney, Australian police have arrested seven teenagers in connection with the stabbing of an Assyrian Orthodox bishop. More than 400 officers were involved in the operation, executing 13 search warrants at various properties. The suspects, considered an immediate threat, were apprehended as authorities feared they may be planning further attacks, posing an “unacceptable risk” to the public.
The detainees, aged between 15 and 17, are believed to be part of a network that includes a 16-year-old member allegedly involved in the recent attack on the bishop during a livestreamed sermon at a church in western Sydney on April 15. Five additional teenagers are being questioned by a joint counterterrorism team, comprising federal and state police, ASIO, and the New South Wales Crime Commission.
New South Wales Police Deputy Commissioner David Hudson stated that the individuals adhered to a religiously motivated, violent extremist ideology. Investigations have led authorities to conclude that an attack was likely. The stabbing incident, which left the bishop and another priest injured, was swiftly labeled a “terrorist” act by the police, attributed to “religiously motivated extremism.”
Australian Federal Police Deputy Commissioner Krissy Barrett clarified that there is no evidence suggesting the network had specific targets or a timeline for any intended violent act. She also emphasized that the operation is unrelated to the upcoming Anzac Day, a public holiday when Australians commemorate their war dead, which has been targeted by extremists in the past.
ASIO Director-General Mike Burgess confirmed the agency’s involvement in the operation, highlighting their role in providing security intelligence to enable the police to address immediate threats. Burgess further noted that investigations involving minors have seen a recent increase due to factors such as social media content. He cautioned that minors are a vulnerable cohort susceptible to radicalization.
