Philadelphia 76ers player Kelly Oubre Jr. was hospitalized Saturday night after being hit by a car in a hit-and-run incident in Philadelphia. The 27-year-old basketball player, who joined the 76ers this year, was walking near his downtown Philadelphia home in Center City when the accident occurred.
The Philadelphia Police Department reported that the incident took place at the intersection of Broad and Locust streets around 7 p.m. A silver car involved in the incident fled the scene, and as of now, no arrests have been made in connection with the hit-and-run.
Despite his injuries, Oubre managed to reach another intersection where he flagged down paramedics. He was subsequently transported to Jefferson Hospital and was in stable condition upon arrival, as per a statement from the 76ers shared on social media.
Daryl Morey, the 76ers’ president, along with team officials, visited Oubre at the hospital. According to team sources, Oubre was released from the hospital later that evening after receiving medical care.
The 76ers announced that Oubre is expected to miss a significant portion of the season due to his injuries but should return to play before the season concludes. Details about his specific injuries and the treatment plan have not been disclosed. The team mentioned that Oubre would be working with the 76ers’ medical staff for his recovery.
This injury comes at a time when Oubre was experiencing one of his best seasons in the NBA, with an average of 16.3 points per game and a 50% shooting rate, contributing to the 76ers’ strong start to the season.
Oubre, who was the 15th pick in the 2015 NBA draft by the Atlanta Hawks and subsequently traded to the Washington Wizards, has previously played for the Phoenix Suns, Golden State Warriors, and Charlotte Hornets before signing with the 76ers.
