A woman, identified as Ambrey Lynn Welch, 34, is facing criminal charges after allegedly attempting to kidnap a stranger’s 1-year-old child at knifepoint in Ogden, Utah. The incident occurred on Sunday in the 500 block of 31st Street.
According to a police booking affidavit, officers responded to reports of multiple people fighting in the street. Upon arrival, they found Welch carrying a can of beer and a kitchen knife measuring approximately 10 inches long.
Three witnesses informed the police that Welch had opened the door to a stranger’s car, started unbuckling a 1-year-old’s car seat, and expressed surprise that the child’s mother would allow the child to be taken. The affidavit states that the child’s mother feared serious harm or death as Welch had a knife in her hand while unbuckling the child.
When instructed by the police, Welch dropped the knife. She admitted to officers that she had consumed “many beers” and claimed she grabbed the knife to investigate suspicious noises before leaving her house.
Welch has been charged with attempted child kidnapping, obstructing justice, and carrying a dangerous weapon while under the influence of alcohol/drugs. She is currently held without bail in the Weber County Jail due to being considered a substantial danger to the community.
Welch is scheduled to appear in 2nd District Court on September 6.
