Woman Escapes Would-Be Rapist on Upper East Side, Suspect Flees on Motorized Scooter

A woman managed to escape a potential rapist on the Upper East Side of New York City, as the suspect made his getaway on a motorized scooter, according to the police. The incident occurred in front of 349 East 76th St. at approximately 11:45 p.m. on Friday. Authorities responded to a 911 call reporting an “assault in progress” and found the distressed victim at the scene. She was subsequently transported to New York-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell Medical Center, where she is in stable condition.

Reports suggest that the courageous victim received assistance from at least one good Samaritan and sought refuge nearby, although these details remain unconfirmed. The alarming incident took place amidst an 11% increase in reported rape cases across the city, as per the latest data from the NYPD. The assailant, who remains unidentified, fled the scene heading westbound on East 76th Street on a two-wheel scooter, as stated by an NYPD spokesperson. No arrests have been made thus far.

The attack has left New Yorkers deeply unsettled, with concerns raised about the safety of the city’s streets. “We have an influx of people from all over the world that’s contributing to the crime. I think the mayor has to do a better job of policing the streets,” expressed Chris, a man working out at a nearby New York Sports Club. The gym’s front desk employee, while acknowledging that the neighborhood is typically safe, found the incident surprising and emphasized the need for caution. “It’s scary, you know. You just got to be careful.”
