Animal rights activists gathered outside the court hearing in Media, Delaware County, on Monday to protest against Anigar Monsee, an Upper Darby woman accused of torturing animals and sharing the disturbing videos on social media. The accused allegedly sought to gain views and followers by inflicting harm on innocent creatures.
According to Upper Darby Police Superintendent Timothy Bernhardt, one of the videos shows Monsee with a chicken, enticing more likes and viewers. Once satisfied with the number of viewers, she proceeds to harm and ultimately kill the chicken over a span of ten minutes. Similar videos depict the suspect engaging in the same cruel acts towards a pigeon, a rabbit, and several frogs.
The investigation into Monsee’s actions was initiated following an email tip from the animal rights organization People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA). Authorities arrested Monsee in January, and she reportedly confessed to the abuse. She now faces four felony counts of aggravated cruelty to animals.
A group known as “Revolution Philadelphia” is advocating for the maximum sentence for the accused.
