Wander Franco’s Legal Battle Takes a Shocking Turn: Accused of Abuse, a Baseball Star’s Future Hangs in the Balance

The legal saga surrounding Tampa Bay Rays shortstop Wander Franco has taken a dark and unexpected turn. Accused of having a relationship with a 14-year-old girl and allegedly paying her mother thousands of dollars for her consent, Franco now faces charges of sexual and psychological abuse, according to a judge’s resolution obtained by The Associated Press.

Originally facing charges of commercial and sexual exploitation, as well as money laundering, which could have resulted in a combined prison sentence of up to 60 years, Franco’s new charge carries a lesser penalty. If found guilty, he could face between two to five years behind bars. However, it is important to note that Franco has not been formally accused at this time.

The judge, Romaldy Marcelino, noted in his decision that the case against Franco was treated differently and more seriously due to his status as a professional MLB player. The judge did not provide further details on this matter. Additionally, Marcelino determined that the money Franco allegedly gave to the girl’s mother cannot be considered payment for her services, as the mother only requested money after discovering the relationship, which lasted for four months.

The girl’s 35-year-old mother, who remains under house arrest, is also charged in the case, with the original money laundering charges still standing against her. To protect the girl’s privacy, the AP has chosen not to disclose her mother’s name.

Franco, who had been having an exceptional All-Star season before being sidelined in August, was detained for a week before being conditionally released on Monday. As part of his release, he was required to pay a deposit of 2 million Dominican pesos ($34,000) and must meet with authorities once a month in the Dominican Republic as the investigation continues.

Both the Dominican authorities and Major League Baseball are conducting separate investigations into the allegations against Franco. The MLB placed him on the restricted list on August 14, before moving him to administrative leave on August 22. The outcomes of these investigations are still pending.

Franco, who signed a lucrative $182 million, 11-year contract in 2021, now finds his future in the sport hanging in the balance. As the legal battle unfolds, the baseball world watches with bated breath, waiting to see how this shocking turn of events will impact one of the game’s brightest young stars.
