A Virginia state trooper is recovering after being involved in a collision with an impaired driver on Interstate 495 in Fairfax County. The incident occurred at approximately 3 a.m. on Tuesday when Trooper C. Aziz responded to a sedan stopped in the northbound lane of the highway.
The driver of the sedan, identified as Erica Bernard, remained inside the vehicle and refused to cooperate with the trooper’s requests to exit or move the car to a safer location. As Trooper Aziz was dealing with Bernard, a Jeep Cherokee collided with a tractor-trailer that had stopped in a travel lane due to the sedan’s presence.
The impact of the collision caused the Jeep to spin around and strike the trooper’s patrol car, which, in turn, hit the sedan and Trooper Aziz, who was standing outside the driver-side door. Remarkably, the trooper sustained only minor injuries and was transported to Fairfax INOVA Hospital for evaluation.
The driver of the Jeep, Joanna Hatch, 35, was arrested at the scene for driving under the influence of alcohol. Erica Bernard, 43, the driver of the sedan, was also arrested and faces multiple charges, including driving under the influence of drugs, obstruction, possession of a Schedule 1 or 2 substance, refusal of a breathalyzer/blood test, and improperly stopping a vehicle on a highway. Both individuals were taken to the Fairfax County Adult Detention Center.
The incident was captured on dashcam footage from Trooper Aziz’s patrol vehicle, providing a clear account of the events. The collision serves as a reminder of the dangers posed by impaired driving and the risks faced by law enforcement officers in the line of duty.
