Venezuelan Immigrant Charged with Manslaughter in Fatal Missouri Wrong-Way Crash

A tragic incident unfolded in Hazelwood, Missouri, when a wrong-way collision claimed the life of a 12-year-old boy and left several others injured. Edina Bracho, a 33-year-old illegal immigrant from Venezuela, has been charged with manslaughter in connection with the accident.

According to reports from the St. Louis Post Dispatch, the incident occurred in December when Bracho was allegedly speeding at 75 mph in a 40 mph zone, driving in the wrong direction. Her minivan collided with a Jeep carrying Travis Wolfe and his parents, Timothy and Stephanie. The impact of the crash resulted in severe injuries for all involved.

Travis Wolfe was immediately rushed to St. Louis Children’s Hospital, where he fought for his life on life support for three months. Tragically, he succumbed to his injuries last Wednesday. Bracho’s two children were also seriously injured and received treatment at the same hospital. Travis’ parents, Timothy and Stephanie, were treated at Mercy Hospital for multiple broken bones.

Bracho now faces multiple charges, including first-degree involuntary manslaughter, two counts of second-degree assault, two counts of first-degree endangering a child, and one count of operating a motor vehicle without a valid license. She is currently being held on a $500,000 cash-only bond, with a hearing scheduled for April 8.

Court documents cited by the news outlet reveal that Bracho is an illegal immigrant from Venezuela. However, Hazelwood police Sgt. Scott Schnurbusch stated that her immigration status did not play a role in their investigation. The lack of documentation or identifications in the vehicle made it challenging to identify all parties involved.

Sgt. Schnurbusch expressed astonishment at the distance Bracho traveled in the wrong direction, stating, “One thousand seven hundred feet is quite a big distance to travel at over 70 miles an hour on a 40-mile posted road. That’s a long way to travel in the wrong direction and not realize it.”

The case has gained attention from Senator Josh Hawley, who blamed Travis’ death on US immigration policies. In a tweet, he wrote, “Travis Wolfe, a 12-year-old Missouri boy killed by an illegal migrant. This is what an open border does. Say his name.”
