Unhoused Man Charged in Vicious Stabbing of Hospital Employee in Burlingame

REDWOOD CITY — Joseph Alvillar Jr., a 53-year-old unhoused man, has been charged with attempted murder, assault with a deadly weapon, and battery with serious bodily injury in connection with the brutal stabbing of a hospital employee at Mills-Peninsula Medical Center in Burlingame. The charges were announced by the San Mateo County District Attorney’s Office.

Alvillar entered a not guilty plea during his court appearance on Thursday. The incident occurred on Wednesday evening when Alvillar walked into the emergency department of the medical center and sat down. Witnesses noticed his strange behavior and heard him talking to himself, mentioning that he was searching for a man dressed in white.

A hospital employee, aged 53, who had just put on a white surgical gown, approached Alvillar and offered assistance. It was at this point that Alvillar allegedly produced a pocketknife and viciously stabbed the hospital employee multiple times. The district attorney’s office reported that the victim sustained six stab wounds to the back, two to the chest, and one under the chin.

The injured hospital employee received immediate medical attention and is currently in stable condition. Alvillar was apprehended at the scene and is now being held without bail at the Maple Street Correctional Center. Prosecutors have noted that Alvillar has a history of mental illness but no prior criminal record.

Alvillar’s preliminary hearing is scheduled for February 23. The incident has raised concerns about the safety of hospital staff and the vulnerability of unhoused individuals with mental health issues.
