Newly released bodycam video shows that Brandon Cole, an unarmed man, was shot and killed by Denver police during a domestic violence incident earlier this month. Authorities were responding to a 911 call reporting a neighbor’s concern that Cole had pushed his wife from her wheelchair and was threatening his teenage son. Upon arrival, officers found a woman on the ground and encountered Cole, who appeared to be armed with a knife. In the bodycam footage, the woman can be heard pleading with officers not to shoot. Cole became increasingly agitated, shouting and approaching one of the officers. The officer deployed a stun gun, but it only partially incapacitated Cole, who continued charging towards the other officer. The officer then shot and killed Cole as he raised a marker to chest level and raced towards her. Chief Ron Thomas stated that the Denver District Attorney’s Office will determine if the officer’s actions were legally justified. The officer involved has been with the police department since 2019 and has not been involved in any other shootings.
