U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers in Arizona have achieved a significant milestone in their fight against drug trafficking, making the largest fentanyl bust in the agency’s history. The seizure occurred at the Lukeville port of entry, where officers intercepted a 20-year-old man attempting to smuggle 4 million fentanyl pills into the United States.
The suspect, an Arizona resident, arrived at the port of entry driving a pickup truck hauling a sport recreational vehicle on a utility trailer. Upon initial inspection, officers detected suspicious activity and decided to subject the vehicles to a more thorough examination. During the second inspection, officers discovered anomalies in the trailer’s frame, prompting them to call in a canine team for assistance.
The subsequent search revealed 234 packages of drugs concealed within the trailer’s frame. The packages contained over 1,000 pounds of blue fentanyl pills, totaling approximately 4 million pills. This seizure marks a significant victory in the ongoing battle against drug cartels and their criminal activities.
CBP Senior Official Performing the Duties of the Commissioner Troy Miller expressed the agency’s unwavering determination to protect the nation and disrupt the operations of ruthless drug cartels. The seizure was part of the CBP’s Operation Apollo-Arizona and Operation Plaza Spike, which focus on gathering fentanyl-related intelligence and disrupting cartel activities involved in fentanyl trafficking.
Fentanyl, a highly potent synthetic opioid, has been responsible for nearly 70% of overdose deaths in the United States, according to data from the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The drug claims tens of thousands of lives annually, making it a grave public health concern.
President Joe Biden has called for immediate action to curb the flow of fentanyl into the country. He has urged federal agencies and Congress to implement measures that enhance intelligence collection on traffickers’ evolving tactics and strengthen law enforcement’s ability to seize drugs before they reach communities.
The US Drug Enforcement Administration has also been actively combating the fentanyl crisis, seizing more than 30 million fentanyl pills and over 4,100 pounds of fentanyl powder this year alone. These seizures represent more than 208 million deadly doses that have been prevented from reaching the streets.
